I have chosen my article this week from the New York Times and it is entitled “Obama in China: Breaking the Exchange Rate”. It is actually a blog, written by Simon Johnson, a former chief economist at the International Monetary Fund. Johnson talks about how President Obama is going to Asia and, most notably, China to negotiate China’s unfair exchange rate policy. (more…)

The WTO is an integral part of foreign affairs and trade. It is such due to its extensive authority; most of the industrialized world is a part of it, and the majority of the unindustrialized and developing world are members as well. The article that I chose talks about the World Trade Organization settling disputes between China and the United States.

“W.T.O. Says Aid to Airbus for A380 Was Illegal”
September 29, 2009 · Leave a Comment
The article I have found is titled, “W.T.O. Says Aid to Airbus for A380 Was Illegal” on The New York Times website. This article, published September 4, 2009, talks about how the World Trade Organization had discovered that Airbus had been receiving illegal subsidies for several of their airbus planes, mainly the A380 jet. The complaint had actually been filed by the United States. This money was known as launch aid and the European governments had supplied it, but now Airbus should repay the money. They are slowly doing so as the customers receive their planes. So far, 18 of 200 orders had been delivered. (more…)

“W.T.O. Approves $295 Million in Sanctions Against U.S.”

I found that the article “W.T.O. Approves $295 Million in Sanctions Against U.S.” from the New York Times website sheds light on a trade issue between nations and also gives an example of how the W.T.O. works as an organization. The article reports that the W.T.O. ruled that the United States has to pay a fine of $295 million because of “failure to eliminate illegal subsidies to domestic cotton growers”. Apparently, the United States has been giving around $3 billion dollars to American cotton growers each year since around 2002. (more…)

“World markets shaken by US-China trade dispute”
September 29, 2009 · Leave a Comment
What one individual does will always affect others. This sentiment also holds true for international trade relations and the many relations that exist between the nations that make up the World Trade Organization. Investors feared that the new trade dispute between the U.S. & China would hurt the struggling global economic recovery and as a result the world market fell. The U.S.’s decision to impose trade penalty tariffs on Chinese tires angered Beijing. Beijing officials felt the move was protectionist, which lead them to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization. Additionally, Beijing retaliated by saying they would examine American auto and chicken imports.

WTO Needs to Simplify Membership Regulations
September 29, 2009 · Leave a Comment
This article published yesterday is about commerce Minister Cham Prasidh asking the world trade organization during a meeting in Phnom Penh to address the problems the lesser-developed countries (known as least-developed countries or LDCs) face when trying to join the World Trade Organization. Only three of these countries have been admitted to the organization since the time it was launched in 1995. Cham Prasidh said he believes that it is time they face their problems with the process because it is having negative effects for the advancement of the forthcoming members. Cambodia, which was let in to WTO in 2004 with Cape Verde and Nepal is trying to help twelve of the other LDCs in Asia and Africa during this three-day meeting where they are discussing the new rules. “W.T.O Says Aid to Airbus for A380 Was Illegal”
September 29, 2009 · Leave a Comment
The World Trade Organization did a preliminary report that found that Airbus received illegal subsides of $13 billion for the A380 superjumbo jet, and several other planes. This is the first round of a bitter trade disagreement in almost five years. The World Trade Organization found large amounts of low cost loan money that the European governments provided to develop the A380 jet. Which was illegal launch aid and it should be paid back by Airbus. (more…)

“WTO Says Aid to Airbus for A380 Was Illegal”

The article has to do with the U.S.A charging the European Union with illegal funding of the Airbus and what the World Trade Organization has to do to decide this case. Supposedly, the Airbus A380 which is already in production, received billions of dollars in loans from outside the company and this allowed them to get their product out before Boeing. The W.T.O. seems to have ruled in favor of the U.S. so far, but it also rejected a lot of the complaints made by the U.S. (more…)
